Volunteer Member Agreement

The Chico Fab Lab Volunteer Member Agreement, signed online. Read the whole thing — it outlines your duties and responsibilities as a new volunteer member in exchange for Chico Fab Lab membership privileges.

This is an agreement that outlines the duties and responsibilities of new volunteer members in exchange for Chico Fab Lab Membership Privileges.

Volunteers will be responsible for a regular 3 hour shift, scheduled in advance, one day a week. Volunteers will report to the lab lead or manager, Sterling.

I (your name) will be completing my shift on (day of week) at (time). I will be on time for my shift and complete my entire shift. I will check in with my supervisor at the beginning of my shift, at the completion of each major task during my shift, and before I leave for the day. If a scheduling conflict arises, I will give notice 24 hours in advance of the shift start time. If I am sick, I will give notice 4 hours in advance of the shift start time. I will then make arrangements to make up my shift during the same week. If I continually miss or am late to my shifts, I understand that my volunteer membership privileges may be revoked and I will have to pay a regular membership fee. If I fail to complete my volunteer hours in a given week, I consent to have my account or card charged a $15 fee without further notice.

Welcome to the team! Volunteers are the driving force behind CFL. You will help us accomplish a significant portion of the general duties required to run the facility.

As a volunteer, you will fill many roles and it will be part of your duties to have pride in the Lab and make sure it is presentable and orderly. The Lab is often a disorderly place because of the collaborative nature of shared work spaces. It is your task, along with the other volunteers, to generally present the lab as a clean and orderly facility. Also as a volunteer, you will be expected to take all SBUs, when possible, because you will be working in all zones.

As a CFL Volunteer, you act as host and ambassador to the outside world and members alike. If someone has a question, it will be your job to help find an answer. Chico Fab Lab is a team and as a volunteer you will be a part of that team.

Please read the following role descriptions and check the box next to each one to confirm you agree to fulfill the duties described. Checking each box takes the place of initialing the paper form.

Cleaning Crew

The lab needs to be cleaned and decluttered regularly. When you arrive for your shift and before you clock off you will spend one hour tidying, sweeping, mopping, restocking, returning stray tools to their homes and placing personal items in the lost and found.

Host & Tour Guide

You represent CFL, so greet and introduce yourself to all new faces! Engage those around you. If someone is here to check out the Lab, give them a tour of the facility. If they are a member, be of any assistance you can. As a volunteer, you will become very knowledgeable of the facility, always be willing to share that knowledge with those around you.

Assistant

As part of the varying tasks you will accomplish during your shift, you will likely be called upon to assist other team members and instructors in whatever they may need help with. This might include preparing for a class or workshop, improving zones, or working on lab-wide projects.

Carpentry & Design

CFL is a constant work in progress and you are going to learn some basic carpentry, laser engraving, and other production skills while you are here! Don’t be afraid of what you don’t know, ask for assistance when you need it, and always measure twice.

Tasks including but not limited to:

General

  • Turn off lights in rooms that aren’t being used
  • Move any obvious obstacles
  • Walk through the entire lab and clean up any stray debris, containers, bottles, etc.
  • Empty every trash bin throughout the lab
  • Move misplaced items into the lost and found bin

Laser / 3D Printing

  • Sweep
  • Clean out debris inside the laser beneath the bed with a shopvac
  • Wipe down outside of laser
  • Remove all items from the workbench

Woodshop

  • Put away loose tools and clean up debris
  • Throw away any unusable scraps
  • Vacuum sawdust
  • Empty shop vac

Volunteers will have access to our board where we keep a list of tasks that need to be completed. If the list has not been updated, ask the Lab leads what tasks are available.

3rd Hour: Close Down Procedure — All Rooms

  • Put away any loose tools in tool room
  • Pick up any loose trash
  • Sweep if necessary
  • Empty trash bins into dumpster
  • Turn off lights in unused rooms
  • Leave the labs the way you would want to come back to them

In exchange for volunteer hours, you will be enrolled as a Volunteer Member with all of the privileges and responsibilities of a Pro membership. If you fail to complete the requirements in a given week, your card will be charged a $15 fee.
